(NCSSM online, 2012) REGULATION NCSSM operates under the umbrella of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, yet has its own distinct campus in Durham, North Carolina. Since NCSSM Online is housed on the same physical campus as NCSSM, it shares its accreditation from AdvancED, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. "In July 2007, NCSSM became the 17th constituent instituion of the University of North Carolina system." (NCSSM profile, 2011). Since the students attending are indeed high school students, the instruction must adhere to the standards as required by the Board of Education of North Carolina, referred to as the North Carolina Standard of Course Study K-12. These standards allow accreditation for North Carolina students whether they are attending public or private school, or if they are homeschooled (Public schools of north carolina, 2012). |
POLICIES FOR APPLICATION to NCSSM The online residential program, though free to North Carolina public, private and homeschooled students, is highly competitive. Students may apply for either the residential program or the online program. Students may elect to be considered for both the residential and online hybrid programs because of limited spots in the residential program, yet they must submit separate applications. Once spaces in the residential program are filled, applicants are then considered for the hybrid, online residential program. Application criteria for the students include the following:
