NCSSM Online Students

As indicated in the History and Mission, NCSSM Online is a derivitive of the NCSSM two year, residential high school for high level mathematics and science instruction provided free to juniors and seniors throughout North Carolina. NCSSM Online students differ from the students depicted in the video to the left only in the quantity of time they reside on the campus, and how the majority of their instruction is delivered.

Admission into NCSSM's residential program is very competitive with respect to grades, goals and recommendations of instructors. Though students need separate applications to NCSSM and NCSSM Online, if students are not admitted to the residential program, they are given first consideration for NCSSM Online.

If admitted to NCSSM Online, students would remain at their respective high school campus, be registered there and would participate in the campus life at their home school district. In addition to receiving much of the same instruction as residential students at NCSSM, only in a different mode of delivery, NCSSM Online students reside on the campus two weekends a month, and over the summer as seniors (Plummer, 2011).

The recommendation of an instructor is an integral part of the admissions process, and can allow for a more academically diverse group of students. Though the program is indeed competitive, students in remote areas may not have access to high level math or science coursework to enhance their transcripts. These students will be considered based on an instructor's recommendaton which indicates the student has the drive and commitment to be successful in the NCSSM Online program. As Jim Hunt indicated in the the History and Mission Video, the purpose of the school was to provide high level instruction to the "best and brightest," throughout North Carolina (NCSSM, 2011).
